Jonah Lomu remembered, Cam Newton dancing and Star Wars sport

Jonah Lomu

1) Rugby union lost one of the groundbreaking stars of the game on Tuesday and to remember him here are some of Jonah Lomu’s best moments collected together. Students at his former school Wesley College, in Auckland, performed a Haka in his honour, while Steve Tew the chief executive of the New Zealand RFU, hailed him as union’s first superstar. “I was told I was never going to play rugby at the top level” – a trailer for his yet to be shown in Europe film Jonah Lomu - Back to South Africa; while here is Sky Sport New Zealand’s tribute, followed by a documentary in parts one and two. Here the great man reveals his love of Liverpool FC and missing a plane to watch them, as well as training by lifting car engines to Claire Balding, and proves just what a huge celebrity he was with this roar when appearing on They Think It’s All Over. Finally as testimonials to Lomu’s warmth and generosity off the field flood in, this footage of his visit to South Africa’s Joost Van Der Westhuizen, with whom he battled in the 1995 World Cup final and who now suffers from Motor neurone disease, says it all.

2) Don’t worry: “I’m OK”. Skier survives after falling 1,600ft in under a minute.

3) Going large with a superb compilation of Rory Delap’s biggest throw-ins to the tune of MGMT’s Kids.

4) Three for the price of one: Carolina Panthers’ quarterback Cam Newton makes a huge reach to touchdown, proceeds to infuriate the opposition with his celebration and causes a minor ruckus in the crowd by giving them the ball. Of course, Newton has some form in all three areas; going himself to make a touchdown against Houston; upsetting opposition fans by tearing down a Green Bay banner and ensuring a young fan gets the ball after a touchdown despite the efforts of Julius Peppers.

5) “And if you don’t like that, you don’t like NBA basketball!” Happy birthday Jason Williams. Arguably the most flair baller to grace the NBA, the man nicknamed ‘White Chocolate’ turned 40 on Wednesday. Here are his best bits as a Sacramento Kings player and his top ten career plays. He’s still doing it, by the way. Absolute filth. His son ain’t bad either.

6) A sport it is not. Yet. But becoming one doubtless it is.

Our favourites from last week’s blog

1) Has to be said, this is a cracking header as Greek side Doxa Ambelou score but wait, their fans have ensured they have watched it in comfort in their own mobile stand ...

2) Gymnastic coach Paul Hunt, the 1972 US National floor exercise champion, also enjoyed a sideline doing spoof interpretations of women’s routines that were affectionate and expertly executed while under the moniker Paulette Huntinova, here are some of his best on the floor, the uneven bars and the beam.

3) Lovely short film looking back a decade to the week when Australia qualified for their first World Cup since 1974 and what it meant for Aussie soccer.

4) The Dale and Dale Show: What it’s like when dad is in the comms box and calls your first ever Daytona 500 win.
