Jon Stewart returned to television screens just weeks after retiring by unwisely taking on WWE wrestler John Cena.
The acerbic comedian swapped his sharp suits for a jumper and jeans when he hosted the World Wrestling Entertainment’s SummerSlam on Sunday, a gig that was something of a departure from his role as news anchor on The Daily Show.
"I've spent the last 16 years talking about politics, it's nice to be back in reality,” Stewart told the audience.
"Let me tell you the difference between politics and what you’re going to see tonight: the WWE performers you will see tonight, they respect their audience.”
Having been liberated from the desk he sat behind for over a decade, the 52-year-old at one point launched himself into the ring and hit Cena with a folding chair, helping his rival Seth Rollins secure a victory.

Stewart's intervention comes after he appeared on Monday Night Raw in March and kicked Rollins in the groin.
Unfortunately for Stewart, his return concluded with him lying flat on the floor a day later, after being unceremoniously picked and chucked there by Cena at WWE Raw on Monday in revenge for intervening.
His next role might take him back down a more serious route after thousands signed a Change.org petition calling for him to moderate the presidential debates ahead of the 2016 elections.
