Jon Stewart has defended fellow comedian Samantha Bee after she was criticised for calling Ivanka Trump a “feckless c**t” on her late-night show.
The former Daily Show host addressed the controversy during Clusterfest comedy festival in San Fransisco, discussing the apology Bee issued after the White House called on TBS to cancel the show.
“They don’t give a shit about the word ‘c**t,’” Steward said of the Trump administration, according to The Daily Beast. “That is probably—he says that instead of ‘please,’ I’m guessing.”
The report indicates that Stewart seemingly implied Bee should not have apologised for the comments, saying that the White House are playing a “game” to make themselves look like “the real victims,” adding: “it’s a game, it’s a strategy and it’s working.”
Conservatives have been up in arms ever since Bee made the comments, Sarah Huckabee Sanders – the White House press secretary – saying the comments were ”vile and vicious” and calling on her show, Full Frontal, to be cancelled.
The 48-year-old comic initially made the comments on Full Frontal, lambasting the Trump administration for the “evil” practice of separating undocumented immigrant children from their families. She then criticised Ivanka Trump for being “oblivious” after the White House adviser shared an image on Twitter of her hugging her child.
“You know, Ivanka, that’s a beautiful photo of you and your child, but let me just say, one mother to another, do something about your dad’s immigration practices you feckless c***,” Bee said.
“He listens to you. Put on something tight and low-cut and tell your father to f****** stop it. Tell him it was an Obama thing and see how it goes, OK?”
Following a Tweet from Donald Trump - in which the President called on TBS to fire Bee - she apologised, calling the comments “inappropriate and inexcusable”. The network also issued an apology, saying the comments were “our mistake too, and we regret it”.
