Jon Obika admits Kyle Magennis will be tough to replace and takes aim at Jags to end losing streak

Striker Jon Obika admits it will be tough to replace Kyle Magennis after the St Mirren skipper completed a painful late deadline day move to Hibs.

Obika believes the midfielder’s engine will be tough to replace as the Paisley side look to climb away from the bottom end of the Premership table.

He told Express Sport: “Magennis is a great player and a great guy off the pitch. He’ll definitely be a big miss.

“I think you saw last season before his injury that he can drive forward well and link the play well from defence to attack.

“He’s got a good engine on him too that will be tough to replace.”

On the pitch St Mirren have the perfect opportunity to get back to winning ways when they welcome Partick Thistle to Paisley tomorrow night.

The Betfred Cup opener sees Jim Goodwin’s side take on a League One side who haven’t played a competitive fixture since March.

Obika, St Mirren’s top goalscorer last season, added: “We didn’t look like we lacked confidence against Aberdeen.

“The loss was tough to take but I feel like in the games against Partick Thistle and Queen of the South we need to put in that sort of effort.

“I feel a win changes everything, especially for the morale of the boys. We’re a confident bunch anyway.

“Partick Thistle might be a team that sit in and we have to find a way to unlock them.

“I feel goals change games. For the strikers and midfielders, we want to be that person to take the initiative and think that we’re going to take it to them.

We’ve got a good group and there are goals in our team.”
