Jon Lansdown hopeful that Bristol City fans will be able to return to Ashton Gate soon

With COVID-19 restrictions restricting travel to and from Guernsey Steve Lansdown was unable to speak live on the radio as he traditionally does at the start of each Bristol City season.

Instead club chairman Jon Lansdown took to the airwaves just before kick-off against Coventry City to discuss the coming campaign.

Lansdown had earlier taken to social media himself, saying 'It’s come around fast! Opening game without our fans is going to be really weird but the team are ready. Can’t wait to have everyone back. Hope you can enjoy the game from wherever you’re watching. Up the City!'

And he followed that up with discussing next months on BBC Radio Bristol on Saturday afternoon.

He hopes to see supporters able to return to games soon with talks ongoing regarding their return.

"It’s difficult and changing all the time," he said regarding current legislation.

"It’s great that football’s back and starting again but at the same time it sucks not having fans here.

"It’s just not the same but it’s better than not having it. As soon as that can happen the better. We’re ideally situated for it.

"We’re well prepared for it with big concourses and more. We’re perfectly set for it. As soon as we’re allowed we’ll invite as many people as we’re allowed safely to do it.

"We’re looking forward to that. Hopefully it won’t be too long away," he told BBC Radio Bristol's Geoff Twentyman.

Talks are continuing with the government and governing bodies with the Premier League releasing a statement on Friday.

Lansdown confirmed that the EFL is pushing for a return too.

"The same discussions are happening all across football," he said.

"People are in different situations depending on their stadia. We’ll be pushing as hard as we hand.

"Mark [Ashton]’s on the EFL board so we have a route into communication and where things stand.
