Jon Lansdown explains why Nigel Pearson is the man to lead Bristol City to the Premier League

Jon Lansdown has been at the Robins High Performance Centre over the last two weeks speaking extensively to Nigel Pearson about what the future looks like for Bristol City.

The culmination of those discussions was the confirmation of the manager's new three-year deal on Thursday, and Lansdown joined the former Leicester City boss in facing the media to discuss the new deal and much more.

The club chairman was asked what Pearson brings, that perhaps Dean Holden and Lee Johnson have not offered previously. Of course, the players available and other factors all play a part in results too but finally in Pearson the club has a man in charge who has been there and done it, with multiple successes.

The fans were craving for pedigree last summer. Now they have it until 2024.

"The experience speaks for itself. I think it's the leadership that comes with it and the qualities that adds. We've got a lot of the pieces in place to perform from like the High Performance Centre that we're in, but we need that leadership and experience to really push us forward," explained Lansdown.

"That won't happen overnight. But he's got a lot of qualities that you'd want," he added.

What most fans will want to do is know if the club will support Pearson financially.

Lansdown explained that there would be no changes to the current strategy, but that the Robins would support where they can.

"As a football club we've always looked to support our managers. We've got a number of high players who have not been available through injury. We've got a number of youngsters who have developed this year as well," he explained.

"For us it's about the overall balance of the squad and the construction of it. We're not going to change the way we act and the way we do things, but if there are opprtunites then we will always look to support him. It's not something that we believe you can do purely solve by throwing money at it.

"We don't think that's the right way to go. But we will always look to improve and if we can recruit the right players then we are in a situation this season where we do have some flexibility within our squad in terms where we have some players out of contract which means that we have some choices," he said.
