Jon Jones has vacated the UFC light-heavyweight title on the same day that Daniel Cormier called time on his career.
The 33-year-old confirmed on Twitter that, after discussions with the hierarchy, his belt was now up for grabs.
Jones last fought back in February when he beat Dominick Reyes in the fifth round to record his 26th win.
He had publicly aired his frustrations earlier this year when he claimed he deserved a greater slice of the financial revenue.
UFC president Dana White refused to budge but it looks as if progress has been made between the two parties and Jones could now move up to heavyweight.
Former heavyweight champion Cormier lost to Stipe Miocic at the weekend for a second time to conclude their trilogy.
The 41-year-old, who was a two-weight world champion in the UFC, lost the first of his three fights to Jones back in 2015.
And after a career that spanned more than a decade he has opted to call it a day in the Octagon.
He wrote on Instagram : "Thank you all for the love and support. Not what I wanted or expected but it is what it is.
“Congrats to [Stipe Miocic] on a fantastic fight, was an honor and pleasure to share the octagon with you for 50 minutes. Boy did we give 'em a show everytime.
“To my team: I love you all to death, you've made so many sacrifices. I hope I made you guys proud.
“Salina and the kids: thank you for being my motivation. To all the fans: I love you so much. You guys push me to try and be great.
“To Dana White and the UFC : I have loved every minute. Thank you for giving me the opportunity. Been a helluva ride, huh?”
