Jon Gruden says Raiders WR Zay Jones is the ‘most improved’ player on offense

The Raiders are going to be relying on a lot of young players on offense this season. Henry Ruggs III and Bryan Edwards are expected to start on the outside with Hunter Renfrow playing in the slot. Josh Jacobs will get a bunch of carries and second-year tight end Foster Moreau is expected to see more work, as well.

However, there are a few veterans on the roster that could help ease these young players into their respective roles. One such player is wide receiver Zay Jones, who has impressed in camp. Here is what head coach Jon Gruden had to say about Jones during training camp so far in his most recent media session:

“Zay Jones is probably the most improved player on the offense. He’s really done a great job getting himself quicker. Getting himself in premier shape. He’s fast. His stamina is really something unmarked. This guy can run all day. He’s playing a lot more confident, so Zay has a lot of versatility.”

Jones was brought over via trade last season and never quite found a role in the offense as he caught just 20 passes for 147 yards. He never found the end zone in Oakland and couldn’t quite connect with Derek Carr.

Entering the 2020 season, the Raiders will need Jones to contribute early in the year as the young players find their legs. And if Jones does produce, he could earn even more snaps as the season goes on. Look for the former Eastern Carolina star to have a big role in Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers.
