Jon Gruden sings the “Happy Birthday” song like he’s never heard it before.
The Oakland Raiders coach made an awkward effort to get his team to sing to birthday boy and general manager Mike Mayock during a team meeting, boldly leading things off with an extremely tone-deaf rendition of the opening line. Maybe he was nervous. Maybe he’s actually tone deaf. Maybe he was rusty. But Gruden was not good at singing one of the nation’s most universally-known songs.
HBO’s Hard Knocks had cameras around to capture Gruden’s version of the song in the third episode of the 2019 season.
No error on a public stage — even behind HBO’s paywall — goes without consequence. So Twitter laid into Gruden for his inability to sing.
