Jon Flanagan makes Belgium move as former Rangers and Liverpool defender aims to kickstart career

Jon Flanagan has joined Charleroi as he attempts to reboot his career.

The former Liverpool left-back has been without a club since leaving Rangers in June, with Steven Gerrard having deemed him surplus to requirements.

He's since been training with Fleetwood Town, who are managed by one-time Rangers flop Joey Barton.

The 27-year-old has signed a one-year contract with the Belgian First Division A leaders.

Flanagan, who won an England cap against Ecuador under Roy Hodgson in 2014, made only nine appearances in his final three seasons at Anfield and spent time on loan at Burnley and Bolton Wanderers.

Brought to Rangers on a free contract in the summer of 2018, he struggled to hold down a regular place in Gerrard's side and was selected just nine times in his final season, with only five of those appearances coming in the Premiership.

Charleroi currently sit one point ahead of Beerschot and Standard Liege, with the latter side having been beaten 2-0 by Rangers in the Europa League last month.

Welcoming him to the club, Les Zèbres said: "It looks like we have a new zebra here.

The whole Sporting family welcomes Jon."
