Jon Favreau signs on to write live-action 'Star Wars' streaming series

Jon Favreau continues his rise as Disney's shining star. Lucasfilm announced Thursday morning that the director has signed as executive producer and writer of a live-action "Star Wars" series for Disney's new streaming service.

"Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe," Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement.

"This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base," she said.

Favreau should feel right at home taking a more active role in the "Star Wars" universe. The multi-hyphenate has played roles in both the animated series "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" and in May's "Solo: A Star Wars Story."

"If you told me at 11 years old that I would be getting to tell stories in the 'Star Wars' universe, I wouldn't have believed you," Favreau said in Thursday's statement. "I can't wait to embark upon this exciting adventure."

This is Favreau's latest project in Disney's expansive empire. He directed "Iron Man," the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and "Iron Man 2."

Favreau also directed Disney's live-action remake of "The Jungle Book" and is now helming the "Lion King" remake starring the voice talents of Beyonce and Donald Glover.

The "Star Wars" live-action series does not yet have a title or release date.
