Jolly trip turns tragic: 4 Bengaluru students meet watery grave in Ramanathapura Lake

BENGALURU: A jolly trip to Nandi Hills proved costly for four Bengaluru teenagers who drowned in Ramanathapura Lake near Devanahalli Sunday evening.

Superintendent of police (Bengaluru district) Mallikarjun Baldandi said that the four youths left Bengaluru in the morning and visited Nandi Hills. They were returning to the city when they tried to play in a lake on their way back to the city around 4 pm. One of them did know how to swim and started drowning. Others tried to save him and all of them drowned.

According to police, they found and brought out two bodies and search was on for two others.

Police said the villagers found a bike and scooter parked at the tank bund. They also found that some people had kept their shoes and clothes near their vehicles. But they did not find anyone swimming or playing in the lake. The villagers suspected something went wrong and alerted Vishwanathapura police.

The police rushed to the spot and called a rescue team from fire and emergency services. The rescue team managed to bring out two bodies. Police identified the deceased as Shahid Ismail and Faizan Khan. Two more missing persons are Sheikh Tahir and Tohid Muneer.

Police said all boys are residents of Chamundinagar near RT Nagar and studying PUC in a private college. All four decided to go for a picnic to Nandi Hills and they left the city by early morning. They visited Nandi Hills and nearby areas. They took a shortcut to return to Bengaluru and reached Ramanathapura village. They decided to play and swim in the lake. Parents and relatives of the deceased were rushed to the lake.

Police said they have shifted the two bodies to a mortuary for postmortem examination.
