Joleon Lescott makes Sergio Aguero contract admission as Man City star ends goal drought

Joleon Lescott has said he never wants Sergio Aguero to leave Manchester City after the striker ended his 13-month Premier League goal drought.

The Argentine striker - whose last league goal came in January 2020 against Sheffield United - wrapped up the scoring for City in their 3-0 win over Fulham on Saturday.

After a frustrating first-half against the relegation-fighting Cottagers, John Stones gave the visitors the lead in the capital after a fine Joao Cancelo cross.

It was quickly 2-0 when Gabriel Jesus capitalised on a mix-up in the hosts' defence, before Aguero converted from the penalty spot on the hour mark.

It was the 32-year-old's 181st Premier League goal for City.

However, Aguero might not be able to reach that tally with mass speculation surrounding his future in Manchester.

The experienced striker sees his contract at the Etihad Stadium expire at the end of the season and he has been heavily linked with a departure.

Lescott, formerly of City, expressed his love of Aguero to BT Sport, as he admitted he'd keep him at the club if it was up to him.

“I never want to see him leave, but it’s down to him. He’s done so much for the club, for the Premier League, he just wants to play more games," the former centre-back said.

"When you get to the stage of his career, when he’s achieved everything, you just want to play and I’m sure he wants to do that.

"No one is guaranteed at Man City, even when he’s fit, he’s not a guaranteed starter, so I’m sure he just wants to play regularly again.”

Aguero will be hoping for back-to-back starts for City - who are next in action on Tuesday as they face Borussia Monchengladbach in the second-leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie.
