Joleon Lescott makes Man City penalty admission following Arsenal controversy

Former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott has weighed in with his assessment of two controversial penalty decisions in the 2-1 win against Arsenal.

Bukayo Saka fired the Gunners ahead in the first half, where they also saw a penalty shout following Ederson's challenge on Martin Odegaard waved away.

The Video Assistant Referee looked at the incident and did not tell the referee to review the decision, deciding there wasn't a clear and obvious error.

In the second period, it was City 's turn to have a penalty appeal as Bernardo Silva fell to ground under pressure from Granit Xhaka.

Why Arsenal argued the fall was dramatic, the defining point was a shirt pull from the Arsenal man - and that led VAR to call the referee to the touchline, where he reviewed the incident and pointed to the spot.

Lescott believes that the right call was made with the awarding of the penalty, which was tucked away by Riyad Mahrez, but also felt Arsenal were right to feel aggrieved in the first half.

"I think it’s a penalty but I also think Arsenal’s is a penalty. It’s the inconsistency of not allowing the referees to make the decision," he told BT Sport.

"The fact that you’re allowing him to check this and not the first one that’s where the frustration is. If you ask him to do the same or have the outcomes people won’t be as frustrated.

"Yes, people may not agree with the decisions but you’re allowing him to come to the same conclusion with the same process but when the process is different it’s frustrating."

City are now 11 points clear of second-placed Chelsea and 12 ahead of Liverpool, who clash in the Premier League tomorrow.
