Joleon Lescott criticises decision to send off Raul Jimenez in Leeds United's win over Wolves

Former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott has criticised referee Kevin Friend for his decision to send off Raul Jimenez following his foul on Illan Meslier. The Mexican was given a second yellow card for a late challenge on the goalkeeper in Leeds United's 3-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The incident proved to be a turning point in the context of the game after Wolves led 2-0 thanks to first-half goals from Jonny Otto and Francisco Trincao. However, Jimenez's 53rd minute dismissal tipped the momentum Leeds' way and Jesse Marsch's side took full advantage of having an extra man.

Jack Harrison pulled a goal back with a neat finish, before Rodrigo levelled moments later. And the Whites completed the turnaround when Luke Ayling slotted home to cause delirium in the away end at Molineux.

But Jimenez's red card has sparked some debate amongst the footballing community given the effect it had on the game. Lescott has delivered his verdict on the decision and believes that Friend made the wrong call.

He said, via Soccerholic: "I initially thought it was a red card to be honest. But when I saw it on the replay, I didn't think it was. I didn't think he could get out of the way.

"He hasn't gone to hurt him and doesn't make much contact with the goalkeeper. So, I was surprised it was given. Yes, there is small contact and it looks a painful one for both players, but there is no maliciousness there or intent to stop the 'keeper from clearing it. It was a surprising outcome, for me.

"I think the referee made up his mind early. It was out of his pocket before any player got up. I think there's an opportunity there to take his time and have a look. I don't understand why it is a red card. I don't see it as there's no intent to make contact and it was unfortunate."

Karen Carney added: "I completely agree with Joleon. The keeper who came on (Klaesson) was brilliant to be fair to him, but I didn't think it was a red card or a second yellow.

"I thought it was unlucky for Jimenez, Leeds get their bit of luck and they go on to win. It was the changing point, but for me it wasn't a yellow card and shouldn't have been a sending off."
