Joker sequel on the way with director Todd Phillips in talks to return

It's time to spend more time with the Clown Prince of Crime.

According to The Hollywood Reporter , a Joker sequel is now actively being developed with The Hangover director Todd Phillips in talks to return and helm the next instalment.

He is expected to write the script with fellow Joker screenwriter Scott Silver.

It is likely that Joaquin Phoenix will be back to play the role of Joker/Arthur Fleck too, having previously voiced his interest in

The plot for the sequel is currently unknown, but there are multiple possibilities considering the end of the first film.

Phillips is also looking at possibilities of directing further origin story films for DC Comics characters.

Could we be seeing more R-rated, gritty takes on some classic DC Comics villains?

THR speculates the potential for villains such as Lex Luthor and Darkseid getting a darker focus under Phillips.

The Joker (Warner Bros)

It's little surprise that studio Warner Bros is backing Phillips for success since Joker crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, which reportedly earned the director around $100 million.

Meanwhile, director Matt Reeves is moving ahead in earnest with his film The Batman which will star Robert Pattinson as Batman/Bruce Wayne, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman/Selina Kyle, Paul Dano as The Riddler/Edward Nashton, Jeffrey Wright as Commisioner James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and reportedly Colin Farrell as The Penguin/Oswald Cobblepot.

The Batman will be released in 2021, with the next DC Comics films to be released being Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn) and Wonder Woman 1984 in 2020.

Joker is in cinemas now.
