Joker: New trailer unveiled starring Joquin Phoenix and Robert De Niro

The final trailer for Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix and Robert De Niro has been released, giving some insight as to how the titular character descended into villainy.

Phoenix’s character, Arthur Fleck, is seen struggling to connect with those around him, including the mother of a child he interacts with on public transportation.

A social worker then tells him “this is the last time we’ll be meeting”, to which Fleck replies: “You don’t listen, do you?

“You just ask the same questions every week. ‘How’s your job? Are you having any negative thoughts?’

“All I have are negative thoughts.”

Fleck is then portrayed trying to embrace a career as a stand-up comedian and getting introduced to his audience by talk show host Murray Franklin, played by Robert De Niro.

But as his attempt at stand-up fails to bring him the solace he’s looking for, Fleck turns to the chaos and violence that surround him in Gotham City.

“Eh, Murry... One small thing. When you bring me out, can you introduce me as Joker?” he asks towards the end of the clip, cementing his character’s transformation.

The trailer also features Fleck’s love interest, Sophie Dumond, played by Atlanta star Zazie Beetz.

Joker will be released in the US and in the UK on 4 October,
