Joker: Hugh Grant criticises 'unendurable' screening after volume 'much too loud' at cinema

Hugh Grant has complained about the “unendurable” sound levels at a Joker cinema screening, saying it was “much too loud”.

The actor visited the Vue cinema in Fulham Broadway earlier this month to watch Joaquin Phoenix’s critically acclaimed performance as the DC villain, but found his viewing experience was ruined by the sheer volume of the film.

“Am I old or is the cinema MUCH TOO LOUD?” he wrote on Twitter. “Unendurable. Pointless. @vuecinemas.’

The cinema chain promptly responded with: “I’m so sorry for any disappointment felt with the volume levels in our venues Hugh, please be assured we do regularly check these to ensure they comply to health and safety standards.

“I’ll ensure your feedback is passed on to the relevant teams. Have a great day!”

However, Grant was not convinced. “Thanks @vueHelp,” he wrote. “But you don’t know which cinema I was in. So how can you pass it on?”

Punning on the film’s title, he later added: “Joke was on us.”

Joker, which has been the subject of much controversy for its violent themes, has seen huge success at the international box office, earning approximately $543.9 million worldwide.
