People who want to help tackle climate change should join the Green Party, Downing Street's COP26 spokeswoman has said.
Allegra Stratton said joining the Greens or the charity Greenpeace are among "lots of small ways" people can help protect our planet if they are unsure how they can make a difference.
The former Downing Street press secretary later added that people can also join the Tory Party, speaking to The Independent.
Ms Stratton is understood to have responded to a question about what people should do if they believed government actions on the climate emergency were too unambitious.

Green Party co-leader Jonathan Bartley said: “After decades of inaction from both the Conservatives and Labour, we would absolutely agree with the government that joining the Green Party is the best thing people can do to help tackle climate change.”
He added: “As we witness the Conservatives waste time talking about loading dishwashers and fantasy projects such as Jet Zero, it is reassuring to see that they do understand it is only the Greens who can bring about the real change that is needed if we are to prevent climate catastrophe.”
Ms Stratton's endorsement of the Green Party's climate change stance comes days after she suggested people who want to tackle climate change should not rinse their dishes before putting them in the dishwasher.
The COP26 spokeswoman told The Telegraph people should buy shower ge in bar form, packaged in carboard and should walk instead of driving to the shops.
She defended her stance saying she wanted to "connect with people who feel that it's too much and too overwhelming to process".
Teen climate activist Alexandria Villaseñor described Ms Stratton's remarks as "tone deaf".
Writing on Twitter she said: "Stop rinsing dishes before the dishwasher? [Firstly] most people don't have dishwashers [and] at the rate we're going we won't have water to drink with let alone wash with.
"This is the most tone deaf, first world white supremacist suggestion I've ever seen."
