Johnstone park £50,000 refurbishment will give children and families "green spaces to play and relax in"

A £50,000 sum ploughed into a Johnstone park has been welcomed.

Sandyflats Park has been revamped as part of Renfrewshire Council's Village Investment and Green Space Fund.

The cash came from the programme, endorsed as part of the 2018/19 council budget by his casting vote.

Councillor Doig, the independent member for Johnstone North, Kilbarchan, Howwood and Lochwinnoch on the Renfrewshire authority, has backed the move.

He branded it a "Doig dividend" for his community.

It comes after the investment saw Johnstone's Sandyflats park refurbished.

Andy, who is standing for election at May's council poll, said: "I am extremely proud at being able to use my Independent casting vote at the council’s 2018/19 Budget to deliver a fund, the Village Investment and Green Spaces Fund, which I suggested to the council leader in November 2017, which has led to so much significant investment in play parks and green areas across my ward.

"This is a Doig Dividend for my constituents."

He added: "In the case of the Sandyflats Park regeneration I have to commend the Sandyflats Tenants and Residents team which were so crucial in driving this project forward and taking advantage of the Greenspaces policy.

"In particular, I personally want to thank Mr Shaun Mitchell for all the work, as part of the team, he carried out to ensure Sandyflats Park was regenerated. He liaised extensively both with councillors and council officers to make sure we had a very clear idea of what the community wanted.

"He came up with a slogan that typified the drive behind the project – unity in the community – and knowing how important it is for local children to get green spaces to play and relax in we all pulled together to get it delivered.

"Soon Linstone will be delivering their 35 house Ryefield development which is between Sandyflats and Cartside. If re-elected I intend to continue to fight to get more investment for these areas. In recent years both Johnstone Castle and Howwood Road schemes have had major investment so I am determined that soon it will be time for Sandyflats and Cartside to get the same."

Renfrewshire Council has invested £1 million in revamping a string of play parks in the area, including Ellerslie Street and Sandyflats in Johnstone.

Sites in Erskine, Renfrew, Paisley and Lochwinnoch are also included in the programme to renew play equipment with a string of others in for refurbishment.
