A Johnstone dad was granted an Absoute Discharge after he smashed up bedroom furniture when his wife complained about his drinking.
Mark Lewis, 29, lost the plot when his wife Amy told him she was tired of his boozing and he went upstairs and punched their bedroom mirror causing it to break.
But Lewis of Russell Street in Johnstone had his case discharged yesterday at Paisley Sheriff Court.
Procurator fiscal depute Maria Murdoch told the court: “The accused and the witness have been in a relationship for ten years and married for four of those years.
“They have a child together and they were at the address, where they resided together in Paisley at the time of this incident.
“On the evening of the date involved, both were in the garden drinking socially.
“During this time, Lewis said to the his there was ‘no point in this relationship.’
“This confused Mrs Lewis and she told him he needed help with his alcoholism and, if he did not see any point in their relationship, he should just leave.
“At that point, the accused went into the bedroom and punched a mirror, causing it to smash.
“Mrs Lewis was fearful and she called the police and her husband’s mother.

“Police attended and noticed that Mrs Lewis was visibly upset.
“Police went upstairs and observed the smashed mirror and that Lewis had a cut on his right hand that was bleeding.
“Lewis declined medical assistance and he freely stated to the officers, ‘I mean yeah, I got upset and I punched the mirror, I know I shouldn’t have.’
“Lewis was cautioned and charged and taken to the police station.”
Defence agent Jim Clark said: “Lewis and his partner had been under pressure caused by a bout of her ill health last year, and he had taken to drinking too much in order to cope.
“Both parties remain together and there is no reason that they can’t continue to enjoy happy married life.”
Sheriff Sukhwinder Gill said: “I see you have no previous convictions.
“You are a university graduate and work now as a structural engineer.
“I understand your wife has bi-polar disorder and that things are now back on track.
“Therefore I will allow grant the defence motion of an absolute discharge.
“I don’t give these out very often, in fact I can count on one hand how many times that I have so don’t take that lightly.”
