Johnstone Burgh end 2021 on a high with impressive win against Forth Wanderers

Johnstone Burgh inched into the top half of the table with a superb three point grab in the wilds of South Lanarkshire.

The boys are now on a run, with four wins and four clean sheets in a row.

The chilly village of Forth sits 1,000 feet above sea level, but the Johnstone lads brought the Wanderers back to earth with a bump.

They now sit in seventh spot just three points directly above Burgh, who have a game in hand and now sit on 33 points.

It was Sam ‘Esso’ Esplin who made the difference at the weekend with a 52 minute strike that came from nowhere.

Esso showed he had a tiger in his tank and locked onto a superb flick to the edge of the box.

With a cool head, he placed it low to the right post, just beating the ‘keeper who had emerged off his line in a desperate flailing bid to shut it down.

It was an outstanding win in the sunlight at Kingshill Park - the ground is so high it avoided the fog - and the run has helped recover the early season position.

Manager Jamie McKim said: “This was massive, a huge performance for us.

“We are doing enough to win games now.

“The first half of the season has been a bit disappointing for us in terms of results and where we were sitting four weeks ago.”

But the squad regrouped and with some more players becoming available, McKim was able to shuffle the pack.

The club is confident it has met its target for where it wants to be at this stage.

And it’s all to play for in the new year, says McKim.

He added: “The whole team know their jobs.

“Four clean sheets in a row and we need to keep that going.

“As the surfaces improve in the new year, I think you will see us hit more numbers going forward.”

The boss praised his on-loan Yoker ‘keeper Calum Dillon - in for injured Stuart Collins - for recording another clean sheet.

And he said he appreciated Yoker helping out in a nets crisis.

Turning to his goal hero Esplin, McKim said he “has been huge for us”.

He added: “Sam got onto the end of it and put it away, a really, really good finish.

“Sam has been a massive influence this year and hopefully he can replicate that.”

Next up is a Keanie Park home clash against Irvine Vics on January 8.
