Johnston Terrace wildlife reserve

Johnston Terrace wildlife reserve, Edinburgh, by Joe Gordon

Joe Gordon has sent in this picture of one of Edinburgh's hidden gems. He says:

"It's so easy to miss this little garden/urban wildlife reserve, I imagine a lot of people walking on Johnstone Terrace behind the Castle might not realise that over that tall, stone wall on the steep slope down to the Grassmarket is this hidden little gem in the middle of the Old Town.

"And it gives you an unusual angle to take your shot of the Castle - after which continue down the stairs here from Johnstone Terrace to the Grassmarket and have a pint in one of the very old pubs."

Accessed by a staircase above the Grassmarket, the tiny walled garden is owned by the Scottish Wildlife Trust.

The reserve was identified by Sit Patrick Geddes in the late 1800s as a greenspace that could help Old Town residents connect with nature. It is profiled on Lothian Life.

Local writer Juliet Wilson blogged here about her visit to the reserve on its last open day.

Joe Gordon regularly tags his pictures to be shared in the Guardian Edinburgh Flickr pool. See his Flickr stream here and his blog here.

The Guardian Edinbrugh Flickr stream is open to anybody who wants to share their pictures. There are now 140 members, who have shared more than 3,500 images between them. Get involved by clicking here.
