Members of the National Union of Journalists at South Yorkshire Newspapers, a division of Johnston Press, have voted unanimously to strike over threatened editorial redundancies.
NUJ general secretary Michelle Stanistreet said: "The ballot result sends a very clear message to management that our members are willing to fight against the cuts.
"This is a battle about quality and resources and the impact of the cuts is a stark threat to our members' living and the future of the industry."
The union's northern and midlands regional organiser, Chris Morley, said: "The company plans to halve the team producing the best performing weekly paper in the region – the South Yorkshire Times."
