Johnson's OT goal lifts Avalanche over Blackhawks, 4-3

DENVER _ Erik Johnson's goal in overtime gave the Avalanche a 4-3 victory over the Blackhawks on Tuesday night.

The game doesn't mean much for the Hawks, and they played like it in the first period, only getting three shots on goal against the worst team in the league.

The Avalanche, meanwhile accumulated 16 shots on goal.

The Hawks had a more inspired effort in the second period, as they came out and scored three goals from Artemi Panarin, who scored his sixth goal in his last five games on a power play, Ryan Hartman and Marcus Kruger.

Those goals gave the Hawks a 3-0 lead, but the Hawks had an uncharacteristic end to the period in giving up two short-handed goals to Matt Duchene and Gabriel Landeskog.

The Hawks were short-handed as they played without Niklas Hjalmarsson, who is back in Chicago with his wife as she is close to giving birth to their second child, and Duncan Keith, who was a healthy scratch to rest.
