1 in custody after standoff in Johnsburg, shelter in place lifted

(Sun-Times file)

A person was taken into custody after an hours-long standoff with authorities in far northwest suburban Johnsburg that prompted school closures and a shelter-in-place order Wednesday morning in McHenry County.

The incident apparently began Tuesday night when police responded to a call of shots fired at a home in the 3600 block of Fillmore Road, Johnsburg Police Interim Chief Jason Greenwald said at a news conference near the scene.

When officers arrived they encountered “a male subject that was encountering a mental health crises” who barricaded himself inside the home, Greenwald said. A woman, believed to be the man’s wife, was safely removed from the residence.

A McHenry County sheriff’s office SWAT team responded and after several hours of negotiating officers were able to take the man into custody just before 8 a.m. Wednesday, Greenwald said. Charges are pending.

Around 6:45 a.m. the School District 12 announced it will be closed Wednesday because of the “ongoing police matter.”

Greenwald said the decision to cancel classes was made out of an abundance of caution because they weren’t sure how long the situation would take to resolve.

The school district later said in a message to the community that “there was not a direct threat to our schools” during the incident and that students will be able to return to classes Thursday.

Johnsburg police had also asked residents to shelter in place as the situation unfolded but canceled the advisory about 9 a.m. Wednesday.

The village of Johnsburg is about 60 miles northwest of Chicago.
