Johnny Sexton injury update after ace was named Ireland captain for Six Nations

Leinster have described Johnny Sexton injury as a "minor muscle" issue after the veteran out-half was named as Ireland's captain for the upcoming Six Nations earlier today.

Sexton had to come off with a suspected hamstring problem in the 53rd minute of the Blues' PRO14 victory over Munster last Saturday night.

Like James Lowe, who has recovered from a groin injury in time to make Andy Farrell's 36-strong squad for the first two championship rounds against Wales and France, Sexton will be further assessed by IRFU medical staff this week.

The province also say that Tadhg Furlong, who was named in the Ireland squad despite not having played in 11 months, "will look to increase his training involvement" this week after recovering from the calf problem that followed a back injury he suffered last August when the Leinster squad returned from lockdown.

That suggests that the experienced tight-head will get game time at Parc Y Scarlets in a bid to prove his fitness ahead of the Wales game in Cardiff on Sunday week.

Dave Kearney didn't make the cut for Ireland, despite a prolific period on the wing for Leinster, but returns for the Blues ahead of their clash away to Scarlets on Saturday night after recovering from a minor hamstring strain.

Dan Leavy is another who will remain with Leo Cullen's squad and is fit again after a minor calf strain ruled him out of the Munster fixture.

Michael Bent could miss out on Saturday after suffering a neck strain in training, but Jimmy O'Brien, who started on the wing at Thomond Park, misses out after suffering a hamstring injury in that 13-10 win.
