Johnny Sexton in running for World Rugby player of decade

Leinster and Ireland No.10 Johnny Sexton has been nominated as one of World Rugby's players of the decade.

Sexton makes the prestigious shortlist with fans invited to have their say and vote for a winner in the next 10 days.

Nominees in all six awards categories consist of previous World Rugby Award winners over the last decade (2010-19) with Jamie Heaslip's memorable try against Italy in 2016 also in the running for try of the decade.

Sexton was World Rugby player of the year in 2018 - the first Irishman to win the award since Keith Wood in 2001 - after Ireland's Grand Slam success and victory over New Zealand that season plus Leinster's Champions Cup win.

The stats show that Sexton played 86 times for Ireland and the Lions in the decade, winning 51 of those games.

The shortlist features five All Blacks with double World Cup-winning captain Richie McCaw, Dan Carter, Kieran Read, Brodie Retallick and Beauden Barrett all included along with South Africa’s Pieter-Steph du Toit and ex-France captain Thierry Dusautoir.

McCaw boasts an impressive win rate of 61/68 in the decade with Read making an incredible 111 international appearances in that time.

The Women’s Player of the Year winners since 2010, from Black Fern Carla Hohepa to England’s 2019 recipient Emily Scarratt, have been nominated for the Women’s Player of the Decade award.

The vote is open to the public and will close on 25 October and can be accessed here.
