Johnny Sexton and Peter O'Mahony to be assessed as Ireland boss Farrell names Six Nations squad

Andy Farrell faces an anxious start to his Six Nations build-up with squad leaders Johnny Sexton and Peter O'Mahony among those will be immediately assessed in camp.

Ireland's opening championship fixture is against Wales on Sunday week and Farrell is scheduled to name his squad for the championship this morning.

With Farrell and his new forwards coach Paul O'Connell watching on from the stands, Sexton came off in the 53rd minute of Saturday's Leinster victory over Munster at Thomond Park with a hamstring issue.

O'Mahony suffered neck and leg injuries in the same fixture but soldiered on.

In more positive news for Farrell, Jordan Larmour and Garry Ringrose appeared to come through the game unscathed after their recent injury set-backs - while James Lowe and Tadhg Furlong could even see game time for Leinster against the Scarlets next weekend.

Furlong hasn't played in almost a year after back and calf injuries while Lowe has been absent since picking up a groin injury in training in the week after Ireland's loss to England in October.

Asked if he expected to have them available, Leinster boss Leo Cullen said: "Good question, we'll see.

"That's the exciting part of the week. I don't know the answer at the moment, but the two lads are getting close. Lowey hasn't been out that long, but we'll see how the week pans out.

"There's that Connacht game (v Ospreys) and there's a few bits up in the air for the national management. Tadhg trained fully last week, so he's getting very, very close.

"We'll see how the two of them are".

Farrell will also be pleased that centre Bundee Aki, who had been sidelined with a knee injury in recent weeks, made his return off the bench in Connacht's PRO14 loss to Ospreys yesterday.
