Johnny Manziel has joined the AAF

Former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL burnout Johnny Manziel will get his next chance on a football field in the Alliance of American Football.

Manziel most recently played in the Canadian Football League with the Montreal Alouettes, but he was released by the team in February after violating the conditions he agreed to in order to play in the league. The CFL also reportedly restricted him from signing with any other team.

Adam Schefter reported Saturday night that Manziel has signed a player agreement with the AAF, which is currently in Week 6 of a 10-week regular season.

The AAF allocates players to teams closest to the region in which they played college football, which means that the San Antonio Commanders had the right to add Manziel, who played at Texas A&M. The Commanders relinquished their right to Manziel, however, opening the door for the rest of the league. When asked about Manziel, Commanders GM Daryl Johnston said that teams generally try to avoid dealing with a “self-inflicted” disruption.

NBC Sports reports that Manziel will indeed join the Memphis Express, which is 1-5 through Week 6.
