Johnny Depp fans flock to buy his Dior aftershave after he lost his 'wife beater' libel trial

Johnny Depp's fans have been rushing to buy the Dior aftershave he is the face of after he lost his libel trial.

The Pirates of the Caribbean actor, 51, sued The Sun over a 2018 article that called him a "wife beater", but the High Court judge ruled there was enough evidence that he attacked his then wife, Amber Heard, to be fairly called so by the newspaper.

Depp has strenuously denied beating his ex-wife and in turn accused her of abuse, which she has denied.

After losing the case, Depp was asked to step down from his role as Gellart Grindewald in JK Rowling 's blockbuster Fantastic Beasts series.

But so far Dior has stuck by him, and the advert for the Sauvage scent has continued to air on TV.

Internet searches for Sauvage have increased by 23% since the ruling, according to the beauty website Cosmetify.

The aftershave is the best-selling male fragrance at The Fragrance Shop and is in the bestsellers list at The Perfume Shop.

A spokesperson for the Advertising Standards Authority told the Guardian it received 11 complaints from Bake Off viewers who felt the advert shouldn't be shown after the ruling.

But on Twitter a large number of Depp's fans have praised the company for not dropping the adverts.

Some have even reported that it's sold out.

One tweeted: "@Dior Was hoping to get some more Sauvage but it's either on delay or sold out, well done for keeping Johnny Depp as the beautiful face of a beautiful scent, fan bloody tastic marketing."

Another posted: THANK YOU DIOR FOR BELIEVING IN JOHNNY DEPP .. Trying to buy Sauvage but it's sold out .. #JusticeForJohnnyDepp."

A third said: "@Dior I'm glad that Johnny Depp is still the face of Sauvage. I love it. I'm and always be a great Johnny Depp fan."

As part of his findings after the three-week trial this summer, Mr Justice Nicol found on a balance of probability that Depp beat Heard 12 of the 14 times he was alleged to have been violent towards her.

Depp's lawyers had said that that he would appeal against the judgment, which in a statement he called "perverse as it is bewildering".

The same judge has now dismissed Depp's appeal application, saying that he did not believe that it had a "reasonable prospect of success".

Depp has been ordered to pay The Sun £520,000 towards its defence bill by December 7 and a further £108,235 by January 22.

The actor can take the case directly to the Court of Appeal.
