The High Court is hearing the closing submissions in Johnny Depp's libel case against the Sun, centred around an article that claimed he beat his ex-wife Amber Heard.
Depp is suing News Group Newspapers (NGN), publisher of the newspaper, and its executive editor Dan Wootton over an April 27 2018 article with the headline: “Gone Potty: How can JK Rowling be ‘genuinely happy’ casting wife beater Johnny Depp in the new Fantastic Beasts film?”
In final submissions at court today, Sasha Wass QC, for NGN, said the Hollywood star was a “hopeless addict” who could not control his anger and that alcohol and narcotics "brought out the monster in Mr Depp, with his violent explosions.”
NGN relies on 14 allegations of domestic violence made by Heard. Depp denies the allegations and accuses Heard of orchestrating a #MeToo "hoax" against him.
