John Whaite thanks 'kind stranger' after almost having to pull out of BBC Strictly Come Dancing tour

John Whaite has shared his thanks to a 'kind stranger' after receiving a gift while his place on the Strictly Come Dancing live tour was in doubt.

The former Bake Off winner was left gutted on Sunday as he told fans he would be missing that evening's show in Glasgow.

John received a positive lateral flow test and had to isolate in his hotel room while he waited for his PCR results.

I've got a little bit of bad news I'm afraid," he said on his Instagram Story. "A lateral flow this morning has come back positive so I now have to sit here in this glamorous captivity until a result of a PCR comes back.

"I'm hoping it comes back negative because I feel fine. I'm triple jabbed, I had coronavirus in the summer so, I'm hoping it's just a false positive."

He then added: "But that does mean that I won't be able to perform today or tonight in Glasgow so I am very, very, very, very sorry if anyone was hoping to see me shake my thing on the dancefloor today because I just won't be there asking it, I'll be in my hotel room – probably still shaking it."

As he waited for the results, John then took to Instagram to share a look at a mystery gift he had receieved.

The picture showed a bunch of flowers, a box of Thorntons chocolates and a pack of cupcakes.

"Someone sent me flowers and chocolates but there was no card," John said.

"Thank you kind stranger," he added with a love heart.

The good news is, John updated his followers on Monday morning and he'll be back in the show as his PCR test came back negative.

And he also had another surprise care package.

"Thank you to whoever send me another care package of things that I love," he said on his Instagram Story. "Rice crackers, hot sauce, mackerel, and jelly sweets - my favourite things."

The baker and chef has been reunited with his dance partner Johannes Radebe for the last month as Strictly heads across the country.

John and Johannes are among several stars of the show which has been visiting arenas since last month - including a trip to Manchester.

Rose Ayling-Ellis, Rhys Stephenson, Tilly Ramsay, Sara Davies, and 2020 alumni Max George and Maisie Smith, as well as the show's cast of professional dancers, are also on the road for the Strictly Come Dancing Live Tour 2022.

And it was Manchester that finally gave fans what they wanted - a win for John and Johannes.

During the four-show weekend at the end of last month, the popular pair managed to be voted winners by the audience.

It helped break up Rose and Giovanni Pernice's winning streak after they continue to be favourites among fans.
