The Hollywood movie star was on hand to present Taylor with the MTV VMA award for the Video of the Year, .
However Travolta has explained he was actually desperately searching for Taylor among the crowd who had joined her on stage.
Speaking on US radio station Hot 93.3, John said: “There’s so many people that bombarded the stage, that I was looking for [Taylor].
"So the video has me trying to find her, and you know, I thought it was so funny the way it was interpreted. And it’s cool, I didn’t care.”

John was mercilessly mocked for the awkward on-stage moment: "John Travolta giving Taylor Swift's award to Jade Jolie FULLY thinking that it was her is the best thing that happened all night" wrote one.
Another said: "John Travolta mistaking jade jolie for taylor swift has restored my spirits for the next, 3 hours."
"John Travolta giving the award to Jade Jolie is hilarious," added another.
"That's the best thing to happen at the VMA's forever - Mr Travolta you are a legend."

In the radio interview, as reported by HuffPo , John also referred to the moment at the Oscars 2014 when he stumbled over his words and mistakenly called Idina Menzel "Adele Dazeem".
"If I shave my head, it’s headlines. If I mispronounce something, that’s headlines, and I know that about me.
“Sometimes I fantasise, what if I had given it to [Jolie]? That would have been awesome. I should have just gone all the way with it.
“I have a sense of humour about all of that — I always have — because, look, we’re in pretty good shape on any given day that that kind of thing could make headlines."
