John Travolta's grief for Kelly Preston may 'turn him away from Scientology'

Hollywood icon John Travolta may move away from the Church of Scientology, according to a new report.

The Grease star, 66, has been a long-time practitioner of Scientology, having followed the religion's teachings from 1975.

However, according to a report from the Daily Mail, John is now facing a 'make or break' moment with the church following the death of his wife Kelly Preston due to cancer on July 12.

Following Kelly's death, John released a statement that praised the medical team who treated Kelly.

John said: "My family and I will forever be grateful to her doctors and nurses at MD Anderson Cancer Center, all the medical centers that have helped."

The statement has been praised by prominent former Scientologists who are critical of the religion and note the absence of a reference to the church and praise for medical teams.

Scientology critic and former Church member Jeffrey Augustine said: "The statement was unequivocal in the support of medical staff... It shows they've backed away from Scientology."

L. Ron Hubbard, science fiction author and the founder of the Church of Scientology, was known to be "really opposed to chemotherapy and radiation".

Kelly was being treated at Houston's MD Anderson Cancer Center, known as being a hospital at the forefront of cancer treatment and care.

Augustine suggested the absence of reference to the church is indicative of a move away from their influence.

He noted "no acknowledgement in that statement of Scientology, David Miscavige, or auditing, there's nothing".

A former security guard for Travolta and Tom Cruise, Brendan Tighe, also told the publication of how he expects the Church to try and be present for the Travolta family's grief.

Tighe said: "His Scientology handlers will of course try to be there at every step, but he may not want the 'help' right away."

Meanwhile, former Scientology practitioner Sam Domingo also claims to have witnessed the "brainwashing" that Preston underwent as part of the church, especially after the death of her and Travolta's son Jett, 16, in 2009.

Noting that Kelly was the "driving force" behind her husband's involvement in the religion, Domingo said; "Kelly would say herself that Scientology helped her get over Jett's death, they believe he was reincarnated.

"She was constantly getting audited, constantly under the thumb, John Travolta had handlers 24/7 to get him through."

Domingo added that in his opinion, John would either "get spiritual counselling to talk to Kelly" or realise that the church "isn't making him happy anymore" and didn't help save his wife's life.

The Church of Scientology has not publicly commented on the death of Kelly Preston, nor on the suicide of Benjamin Keough, son of former prominent Scientology practitioner Lisa Marie Presley, who died on the same day as Preston.
