John Travolta awkwardly mistakes drag queen for Taylor Swift as he hands over VMA

Movie legend John Travolta has been ruthlessly mocked online after appearing to confuse Taylor Swift with a drag queen.

The oblivious Grease great nearly gave the VMA for the Video of the Year to Jade Jolie, who does have a slight resemblance to the super star singer, instead of the 29-year-old.

Taylor finally got her hands on the prize for You Need To Calm Down after the actor eventually released his mistake.

He smiled as he gave Ru Paul's Drag Race star Jade a hug as the award finally went to the American.

Viewers didn't take long to bring his error to everyone's attention.

"John Travolta giving Taylor Swift's award to Jade Jolie FULLY thinking that it was her is the best thing that happened all night" wrote one.

Another said: "John Travolta mistaking jade jolie for taylor swift has restored my spirits for the next, 3 hours."

"John Travolta giving the award to Jade Jolie is hilarious," added another.

"That's the best thing to happen at the VMA's forever - Mr Travolta you are a legend."

Taylor was more concerned about making her point to Donald Trump.

She appeared to aim a dig at US President after winning the biggest prize of the night.

You Need To Calm Down - a song which criticises homophobia and features cameos from high-profile LGBT celebrities.

The video also endorsed the Equality Act, a proposed piece of legislation that would enshrine into law protections for the LGBT community in the US.

Accepting her Moon Person trophy on stage surrounded by the cast and crew of the video, she said "several points were made" with the visual piece.

She theatrically tapped an imaginary watch on her wrist in an apparent dig at Trump's inaction.
