John Terry's reason for wanting to beat Frank Lampard and Chelsea ahead of Aston Villa clash

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith knows John Terry will be desperate to claim a win over his former teammates against Chelsea.

The Midlands side have already come through their first fixture with clean sheet as they drew with Sheffield United and are now looking for a similar performance against the Blues.

Despite the size of the task, Villa will be hoping to three points to kickstart their campaign to secure Premier League safety and potentially lift them out of the relegation zone.

Smith acknowledged that Terry is Chelsea through and through but noted one characteristic mattered above all else even with his side's struggles.

He explained in his press conference: "He's got a strong affinity for Chelsea and his connections.

"You know, it's still his club.

"He knows all the people,  he's got Frank [Lampard] and Jody [Morris] who are in charge of the football team now.

"He'll certainly be one of wanting to get one over them Sunday even though they are his club because he's a winner at the end of the day."

Like Terry, Tammy Abraham has been at both clubs and following the announcement that Chelsea have signed Timo Werner, will be all to keen to make his claim.

Smith is all too aware of the forward's talent and knows that his team will have to be on top of their game defensively.

He said: "We all are. We've all taken a little bit of stick and rightly so with the goals we've conceded - coaches and players.

"Our defensive organisation hasn't been what we've been working on the training ground and we've managed over the last 12-14 weeks to put that right for the game against Sheffield United.

"We've got to do it against some real top draw players in Chelsea and, my centre-halves know too well how good Tammy Abraham can be so we've got to be even better now on Sunday."
