John Terry calls Alexis Sanchez incident the 'silliest moment' of Chelsea career

John Terry admits his sending off during Chelsea's Champions League semi-final against Barcelona in 2012 ranks as the "silliest moment" of his career.

The centre-half kneed Alexis Sanchez in the back thinking the referee might miss the incident.

It wasn't to be and Terry was shown a straight red with the Blues 1-0 down to the Catalans.

Andres Iniesta made it 2-0 shortly after his dismissal before Chelsea staged an incredible comeback to draw 2-2 on the night and win 3-2 on aggregate.

"I knew I was in trouble," Terry told BeIN Sport about the incident.

"It’s funny because I heard before we played them at Stamford Bridge he got a dead leg.

"In the home game he run past me and I sort of blocked him and caught him on his leg, and he was in absolute agony.

"He was still carrying it [in second leg] so I thought I’ll just give him a little.

"Stupid really, I don’t know why I done the second one at the Nou Camp because it put the team in a dreadful position. ‘

"I look back now and I think it must be one of my silliest moments as a player on the pitch and if you could pick one team you do not want to be down to ten men against its Barcelona at the Nou Camp. I thought I could get away with it."

Chelsea had to contest the final against Bayern Munich without their inspirational skipper.

It didn't matter though as the west Londoners beat the German side at their own stadium to win the Champions League for the one and only time in their history.

Despite his suspension Terry famously hoisted the trophy aloft wearing his full Chelsea kit at the Allianz Arena.
