John Swinney sends clear message to football supporters after weekend events

First Minister of Scotland John Swinney says the actions of football supporters shouldn't be at the expense of others.

It comes after Celtic fans celebrated their club's title triumph in Glasgow's Trongate area on Saturday. On the same day, Aberdeen left-back Jack Mackenzie was struck by a chair that a supporter of his own team threw onto the pitch from the stand.

Speaking to journalists while campaigning in the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse by-election, Swinney said: "I'm not going to revisit the position on alcohol at football games, and I'm very concerned by what I saw over the weekend.

"I understand football supporters want to celebrate the performance of their team, so I don't want any way to question or to doubt that or to say I don't understand that. Of course, I understand it, but it shouldn't be at the expense of other people, whether that's a supporter, which appears to be from the Aberdeen end, throwing a chair that injures an Aberdeen player to their injury, quite serious injury, from what I could see, nor the disruption in the centre of Glasgow, where the city was damaged and disrupted, lives were disrupted, and there's a lot of cleaning up that's got to fall on the city council to to address the issues.

"So I'm all for people celebrating. I quite understand it. It shouldn't be at the expense of others."

Mackenzie required stitches after the blow to his face.

An Aberdeen statement on Saturday night read: "The Club is dismayed and outraged at the scenes that unfolded following this afternoon’s Premiership tie with Dundee United at Tannadice Park.

"Our player, Jack MacKenzie, has sustained a serious facial injury after being struck by a part of a chair that was thrown towards the pitch.

"We await further information, but what we know for sure, the chair was thrown from the stand in which the Aberdeen supporters were being housed.

"As such, we are calling on all fans who may have witnessed this event to contact the Club to provide any information that may assist us in our investigations and wider discussions with the relevant authorities.

"When the perpetrator is identified, we will take the strongest possible action available to us."
