John Swinney 'can't rule out' tougher Covid rules if Scots don't reduce contact

John Swinney has told Holyrood’s Covid-19 committee that he can’t rule out keeping the current lockdown restrictions in place for longer or making further changes.

The Deputy First Minister said that transport data suggests Scots are not following 'stay at home' advice as much as they did in March, and says this could lead to more restrictions.

His comments come after Interim deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Dave Caesar said that he doesn't think "anything is ruled out" in response to whether restrictions could remain in place until March - as Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove has suggested for England.

Speaking to the BBC, Dr Caesar said: "I don't think anything is ruled out, but the quicker that we can control this virus, the quicker we can release these restrictions, undoubtedly."

Meanwhile, the Scottish Government announced travellers coming in from abroad will have to present a negative Covid-19 test before entering Scotland.

The new public health requirement, to be introduced as soon as practically possible, aims to strengthen current safeguards against imported cases and in particular protect against new strains of coronavirus such as those identified in Denmark and South Africa.
