John Swinney announces downgraded SQA exam results will be withdrawn as he issues apology

The move to downgrade pupil exam results in Scotland has been reversed.

Education Secretary, John Swinney, confirmed this afternoon that the downgrades would be scrapped.

Mr Swinney, who apologised to parliament, said initial teacher-based estimates would be used instead.

He made the u-turn ahead of a vote of no confidence in him, which will take place on Thursday.

It follows the furious backlash to a "moderation" system which has seen more than 120,000 results downgraded by the SQA.

Final grades will now be based on the original estimates provided by teachers.

Mr Swinney told Holyrood: "I want to apologise."
