A further 89 coronavirus deaths have been confirmed in Scotland in the last 24 hours.

The latest figures reveal 1,636 new cases of the virus were reported overnight which takes the total number to 168, 219.

The news was announced by Deputy First Minister and Education Secretary John Swinney who stepped in for First Minister Nicola Sturgeon at today’s daily briefing.

2,004 people are being treated in hospital with 161 in intensive care, up five from yesterday.

It was also revealed 334, 871 have now received the coronavirus vaccine across Scotland.

Of the latest cases 510 were in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, 328 in Lanarkshire, and 182 in Lothian. The rest of the cases are split between 10 other health boards in Scotland.

The latest figures come as a Scots nurse, who has been campaigning against 'inadequate' PPE for months, has said the failure to give health workers a higher grade of PPE was “a very dark time in the history of our NHS ”.

The nurse said: “It saddens me absolutely nothing has changed", despite months of complaining.
