John Stones backed to keep transfer target Harry Maguire out of the Man City team

Manchester City's interest in Harry Maguire could give Pep Guardiola a considerable selection headache next season.

The Blues have made the Leicester City defender their top target to replace the departed Vincent Kompany, but any deal will be difficult to do with the Foxes demanding around £90million.

Manchester United have already had a £70million bid for Maguire rejected, so City will have to go higher if they want to land their man.

If they can complete a deal for the England international he will be competing with his Three Lions colleague John Stones for a spot in the team, with Aymeric Laporte considered City's first choice central defender now.

Both Stones and Maguire had an uncertain summer with England in the Nations League Finals, but former defender Micky Gray has claimed the Blues already have the better player.

Stones hasn't always been a regular under Guardiola, but Gray insists he can point to his trophy haul and his extra pace in the battle with Maguire.

“John Stones makes mistakes, so does Harry Maguire," he told talkSPORT.

"Is he quicker? Yes. John Stones is a better centre centre half than Harry Maguire. Look what John Stones has won? It doesn’t matter who is playing in the team."
