John Souttar to Stoke City transfer link intensifies after Hearts star's brother suffers injury

Stoke City are reportedly poised to strike for Hearts star defender John Souttar in the January transfer window.

The Potters have been long-term admirers of the Gorgie centre-back, who is yet to agree a new deal at Tynecastle with his current contract due to expire in the summer.

And now an injury to his brother Harry, who already plies his trade at the bet365 Stadium, could see boss Michael O'Neill swoop for the talented 25-year-old in January - reports the Scottish Sun.

Harry suffered a knee injury while on international duty with Australia, leaving Stoke short of option in defence as they chase promotion to the English Premier League.

While they sweat on his fitness, the Daily Mail understand that the high-flying Championship side believe his brother John has the ability to help them bounce back into the top flight this season.

Former Dundee United star John, whose career has been severely impacted by Achilles injuries, has been in stunning form in Gorgie this season - netting three times from defence including a dramatic late winner against Celtic.

That has led to his return to the Scotland fold, with Steve Clarke calling him up for their crucial 2-0 win over Moldova on Friday night.

While Souttar didn't make it onto the pitch, he'll be hoping to add to his three caps on Monday night when Scotland welcome group winners Denmark to Hampden.
