John Souttar's Hearts playing return could happen this season as Robbie Neilson reveals plan for defender

Robbie Neilson admits John Souttar could see some game time for Hearts before the end of the season.

The defender was included among the substitutes for Tuesday’s calamitous Scottish Cup defeat at Brora Rangers, but was never going to actually get on the pitch.

He took part in the warm up and did some work after the game after over a year out with an Achilles injury.

Souttar won’t be in the squad for tomorrow’s Championship clash against Queen of the South, but will continue to take part in the pre-match and half-time warm ups, as well as the post-game cool down.

He’ll then be back on the bench the following week as Neilson builds him up for a long-awaited return to playing.

He explained: "I was delighted to get John involved on Tuesday. I knew he wasn't going to take part but it was to get him in with the group. He's got great character and leadership and we wanted to phase him in.

"We will be part of it again on Saturday, although probably not on the bench. The following week we'll get him back on the bench and start building him up. He will probably be another three of four weeks till he's back with us in full capacity.

He's had a difficult couple of years. I know him really well. I signed him from Dundee United when I was here first time. He's a brilliant character, looks after himself and wants to do well.

"I was so disappointed for him when he broke down again after we came in. He has been a big miss for us this season because of his quality on the ball and leadership. We're looking forward to getting him back 100 per cent fit.

"He looks really good just now. My concern is trying to push him too quickly because I'm just desperate to get him in the team. We need to make sure he's ready.”
