John Souttar Rangers transfer insight as former coach addresses financial motivator amid English interest

In-demand John Souttar won't leave Hearts to move to England just for the money, insists former mentor Simon Donnelly.

The 25-year-old defender has clubs both sides of the border on alert with Rangers set to make their move with a pre-contract offer for the Scotland star.

Clubs south of the border including Sheffield United are also looking to make their move for the centre-back after he knocked back a new deal at Tynecastle.

However Donnelly, who worked as Dundee United assistant boss while Souttar made his first-team breakthrough, reckons it won't be a pay day that seals a move.

He claims that a vision pitched by the Ibrox hierarchy could be the deciding factor for Souttar.

Donnelly told The Go Radio Football Show: "I worked with John at Dundee United. He's a fantastic football player.

"He has had set-backs. He did his achilles, came back, and did it again, so he missed out on a lot of football. But by all accounts he is back on top form at Hearts this season and attracting interest.

"Rangers are interested, but does he want to go down south? That is a decision for John. But going to Rangers I think he would slot in very easily.

"It's a lot of things. Of course these guys are going to get good deals (in England) but speaking from experience, the club needs to have a vision. Is that where you want to play, is there a future. What do you want to get, do you want to go to the Premier League? All of these things have to come into the equation.

"Going to Rangers, it's obvious you have to be number one and it's a major challenge with Celtic every year.

"I think he would stroll into the Rangers team.

"English clubs will be able to compete, and maybe even better Rangers financially, but it's down to where John sees his future.

"Much like Nathan Patterson, he could be a major player for Scotland as well."
