John Small hits winning point for Ballymun Kickhams - two weeks after father's death

John Small's injury time point helped Ballymun Kickhams inflict Ballyboden St Enda's first defeat of the year upon them in the Dublin Division One final, just two weeks after the death of his father Declan.

Former Kickhams' chairman Small, who was a pivotal figure in the club's resurgence to the top of the county scene in the last 25 years, passed away on December 7.

John and his brother Paddy, both All-Ireland winners with Dublin this year, were co-captains for the evening and got the chance to lift the trophy together after the elder Small sealed the win three minutes into injury time.

Boden, who were aiming to go the entire year of 2019 unbeaten, led at half time with a late effort from Ryan Basquel giving them a 0-6 0-5 lead.

But Alan Hubbard evened things up at the start of the second half, before Fiach Mac Aindriu and John's first of two pivotal points had the Mun in front by two.

Tom Hayes tied things up for Anthony Rainbow's side, however, heading into added time, before Small sent over the winner to clinch the Division One title.

The South Dublin side's focus now shifts to an All-Ireland club semi-final against Kilcoo at the start of the New Year.

But the win will mean a little bit more to Kickhams after the events of the past two weeks.
