John Singleton dead at 51: Boyz N The Hood director dies after suffering stroke

Filmmaker John Singleton has died at the age of 51 after suffering a stroke last week.

A representative for his family confirmed Singleton passed away 'peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends,' reports TMZ.

The news came shortly after Singleton's family made the 'agonising decision' to switch off his life support machine.

A spokesperson said: "It is with heavy hearts we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton will be taken off of life support today.

"This was an agonising decision, one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of John’s doctors," they told Deadline.

Singleton, 51, was described as a "prolific, ground-breaking director who changed the game and opened doors in Hollywood."

The Boyz N The Hood director had been wrongly reported dead earlier on Monday after his family issued a statement about his condition which led to a rush of tributes.

His publicist later confirmed that Oscar-nominated Singleton remained seriously ill in hospital after suffering a stroke last week.

Sources claimed the 2 Fast 2 Furious director did not responded to treatment after falling ill on Wednesday.

TMZ reported he had been in a coma, with his mum, Sheila Ward in the process of applying for a conservatorship order so she could take care of his affairs while he was ill.

John is believed to have checked himself into the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A. after suffering weakness in his leg.

A family member told the site he had recently flown back from Costa Rica, and the journey may have triggered his health issues.

He suffered a stroke while he was in the hospital and was admitted to the intensive care unit.

His family said at the time that he was "under great medical care".

They said: "On Wednesday, April 17th our beloved son/father, John Singleton, suffered a stroke while at the hospital. John is currently in the ICU and under great medical car.

"We ask that privacy be given to him and our family at this time and appreciate all of the prayers that have been pouring in from his fans, friends and colleagues."

Singleton is best known as the first black filmmaker to ever be nominated for the best director Oscar for his 1991 movie Boyz n the Hood. He also received a second nomination for best original screenplayer.

The Los Angeles born star also directed Poetic Justice, 2 Fast 2 Furious and a remake of Shaft in 2002.

A show he co-created for the FX Network, Snowfall, was renewed for a third season last year.

After John's death was confirmed on Monday, tributes began pouring in for the director.

Actress Regina King wrote: "Rest In Power, my friend. One of the greatest to ever do it. Thank you GOD for blessing us with this gift better known as John Singleton. Having trouble finding enough words to share just what you mean to me. Will always love you John! Your spirit will forever shine bright."

Singer Janelle Monae tweeted: "JOHN SINGLETON. A GENIUS . Thank you for capturing US like no other."
