John Sheridan to manage Waterford for final time before joining Wigan Athletic

John Sheridan will manage Waterford for the final time tomorrow before joining administration-hit Wigan Athletic.

The former Republic of Ireland midfielder is set to join the League One club as Paul Cook’s successor.

And it is expected that he will be in the dugout for Sunday’s opening League One clash with Ipswich.

Sheridan was only appointed Blues boss on July 8 and tomorrow’s game at Dalymount Park will be just his eighth in charge.

The former Oldham and Chesterfield boss has lifted Waterford to fifth in the table, but they have lost two of their last three games.

Last month, Sheridan was in the headlines after a war of words with then Dundalk boss Vinny Perth.

Perth accused Sheridan of calling the league a ‘pub league’ during a feisty 2-2 draw at Oriel Park.

“It's a good league, full of quality, and that behaviour is not good enough,” said Perth at the time. “He can take the high ground but it's not a pub league.”

But Sheridan - who succeeded Alan Reynolds at the RSC - refuted the claim a fortnight ago and insisted he was not being disrespectful.

“There was no way I disrespected the league,” he said. “I never said the league was a shambles.

“That was what Vinny Perth said – he made something out of it. That was stuff that goes on in football sometimes.

“If I disrespected the league, I wouldn’t have come here in the first place. I love Ireland and love the people. I’ve come over for a reason – which is to do well with Waterford.”

But that spell in charge is coming to an end with club sources admitting that Sheridan will take charge for the final time against Bohs.

Blues owner Lee Power is expected to make a quick appointment with just eight games remaining.
