John Schneider: ‘Very challenging’ to keep Wagner, Clark and Reed

Fresh off a four-year, $140 million dollar extension for star quarterback Russell Wilson, the Seattle Seahawks are now facing potential contract extensions for three key pieces of their defense: edge rusher Frank Clark, middle linebacker Bobby Wagner and defensive tackle Jarran Reed.

All three will become free agents after the 2019 season if they are not extended, and the trio are each expected to command annual salaries over $10 million, with Clark’s potentially reaching upward of $20 million.

Including Wilson, that’s a lot of money tied into four players, and could be out of the range of possibilities for Seahawks general manager John Schneider and company.

“Feasible, very challenging,” was Schneider’s response when asked about keeping the trio of defensive stars. “I think about it all the time.”

Of course, Seattle is already exploring a way to avoid that scenario by listening to trade offers for Clark. Seattle indicated they want a first round pick in return for Clark, a hefty price tag but one that a few teams are reportedly interested in.

Less has been made about Wagner and Reed’s contract situations, although Seattle typically likes to hammer out these extensions at the start of training camp, which is not for a few months.

When that time comes, expect to hear more about negotiations with Wagner and potentially Reed as well.
